The Best Care Guide For Growing A Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree – Part II

Part I of Care Instructions for Chinese Elm Bonsai dealt primarily with the watering, and placement and sunlight, for your Chinese elm bonsai. This Part II will focus on pruning, repotting, and root pruning of your Chinese elm bonsai.

When and Exactly how to Prune Your Chinese Elm Bonsai

Your Chinese elm will respond best if you do all of your major pruning in the spring or early summer when the tree is at it’s strongest and healthiest. The elm grows rapidly at this time of the season so you’ll want to keep up with the trimming. Good branch ramification comes about fairly quickly with the Chinese elm. When pruning it’s best to allow 4-5 sets of new leaves to grow before cutting back to only one or two located nearest to the tree trunk or branch. It’s generally a good idea to never cut so much that it causes the tree to become weak, but cut enough to help keep it well-shaped. Vitality is maintained using this method as this procedure is then done again through the entire growing season.

Re-Potting Your Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree

How frequently you ought to re-pot your Chinese elm is dependent upon several factors among them how old the tree is, how big is the tree, and what condition it’s roots are in. Less mature trees typically must be re-potted every year until they are 4-6 years of age. Older trees, or those in bigger pots, may require repotting every two to four years. Re-potting your bonsai tree provides you with an opportunity to prune the roots of your plant. This keeps the roots from growing to be overcrowded, and influences new growth. The perfect time of year to re-pot and root-prune your Chinese elm is in the early spring. You should wait no less than thirty days after you’ve pruned any of the tree’s branches or new shoots, and similarly, don’t prune branches or shoots less than thirty days after you have re-potted and pruned the tree’s roots. Doing so any sooner could result in stressing out your tree.

When and How to Prune Your Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree’s Roots

Plants roots are invariably searching for new nutrient and water-rich soil. Plants require new root growth so that they can further increase food and nutrient absorbtion. If you will do any severe root pruning you should attempt to get it done in winter or early spring. This is when the tree is in it’s inactive stage.

Older, much larger roots are less efficient than younger, smaller roots in soaking up water and nutrients, and so cutting away more substantial roots is in fact good for the plant.

The initial step in this process would be to remove your bonsai from the pot. After the plant has been removed you’ll want to divide each of the roots from each other.

After the roots have been separated you can shorten the plants storage roots and get rid of any leftover part of the plant’s tap root. Don’t cut any of the smaller, finer roots. You want to retain these. Trim the roots so the plant will fit back into the pot without having to fold any of the roots to make them fit. To be on the safe side you should never remove more than one-half of the roots, especially if root pruning will be done in the dormant season.

Place the trimmed root ball on top of the fresh soil in the pot, and carefully add extra soil in the spaces in between the roots of your Chinese elm bonsai. Ensure that all of the spaces have been filled in with soil employing a tool, or a chopstick, to very carefully compact the soil in the spaces. Carefully press down the surface of the soil and then perform a good watering. It’s OK to entirely saturate the soil when you water your tree following it’s re-potting and pruning. After saturating the soil allow it to drain entirely, then water it again. This will help settle the soil surrounding the roots.

While the roots are recuperating from the pruning you cannot subject it to direct sunlight, or give your tree fertilizer (which could burn the plant’s roots) for several weeks after you have re-potted the tree.

Don’t Waste Your Greenhouse Space

Perhaps a mixture of edibles and beauty is just what the doctor ordered until the next outdoor growing season comes around.

Plant varieties that are compact rather than the sprawling vining type will make better use of your greenhouse space. Bush varieties are ideal because they grow well in pots or hanging baskets.

When selecting your greenhouse plants, remember that varieties that grow vertically take up less space, but they can tend to block sunlight. Tall plants and those that vine require containers that are large enough to allow for adequate root development.

Peas, beans, cucumbers, squash, melons, figs, bananas and tomatoes are available in both vine and bush varieties that do well in greenhouses.

If you have a small green house you will especially want to choose your plants carefully. Potatoes are cheap at the supermarket. If you use a lot of herbs, fresh ones can be quite costly in the market. Grow the ones that will help you save money.

Choose warm weather varieties if you live in a hot climate. Passionflowers, jasmine and gardenias are excellent for flowering plants. For fruit, bananas and citrus both love heat. For tropical beauty, try growing orchids for their exotic look and intoxicating fragrance.

A long spell of overcast winter weather can cause nitrates to build up in greenhouse soil, so it is best to choose varieties that are known to pull fewer nitrates from the dirt. When you buy seeds or plants for a cold weather greenhouse, be sure they are nitrate resistant.

People that are not yet entirely familiar with the art and horticulture of bonsai believe that bonsai trees and plants must be grown indoors. In fact, any tree that  can grow outdoors in the wild can also grow and thrive outdoors as a bonsai, despite it’s diminutive height.

Unfortunately this faulty premise or belief about bonsai trees can be calamitous for the novice bonsai gardener, and oftentimes results in killing their first bonsai tree. The truth is that some trees are very well suited to be an indoor bonsai tree, and other trees and plants aren’t meant to be grown indoors.

The trees and plants that are as a rule considered to be indoor bonsai are those that are native to tropical and subtropical climates, and they are being grown as bonsai in a more temperate climate. If you want your indoor bonsai trees and plants to thrive then you must be sure to keep them in a warm and humid environment, similar to that environment where they come from. Maintaining the higher levels of humidity should be the constant concern of the indoor bonsai gardener, but there are simple ways to accomplish this. One easy way to keep the humidity levels up for your indoor bonsai is to spray it frequently with a mister.

Unlike outdoor bonsai plants and trees, whose growth patterns are greatly influenced by the ever-changing of the seasons, indoor bonsai are not likewise influenced. Outdoor bonsai trees will experience new growth in the spring and summer, they will shed their leaves in fall, and then they will rest during a inactive stage in the winter – indoor bonsai do not follow this pattern. Indoor bonsai are generally “evergreen”, meaning that their leaves stay green all year-round. Some “outdoor” bonsai trees that are tolerant of, and adaptable to indoor conditions, may stay green year-round under the right conditions, and would then be considered “evergreen”.

The methods of pruning and training indoor bonsai is much the same as with outdoor bonsai, with the exception being the timing of the training and pruning. You can hurt an outdoor bonsai tree if you prune, cut, graft, or use other training methods, at the wrong time of year. Indoor bonsai plants mostly grow throughout the year, with the most active growth periods occurring during spring and summer.

You are better off shopping for a suitable plant to make into an indoor bonsai tree at a nursery or garden center than to purchase one at a supermarket. There is a wide variety of plant and tree types to choose from to make an indoor bonsai. Many traditional houseplants can be grown as indoor bonsai. In a follow up article I will select four or five plants and trees that I think are highly suitable as indoor bonsai projects for the beginner bonsai hobbyist.

Information Concerning Building Chicken Coops In Your Backyard

Eggs and meat are two advantages that result from raising chickens, however they still require housing. It is not necessary that you be a skilled carpenter to do this. You do not need very pricey supplies or difficult plans. Chicken coops are easy to build if you adhere to the tricks listed below.

It is important that you plan the chicken coop. The first step is placing structure on high ground, or elevate it. This will keep rain from puddling in your chicken pen. Next, decide how big you want the coop. It is important that each chicken has roughly one and one half to two square feet of space in the coop. The yard will require eight to ten square feet per bird.

Next, sketch your design on paper. You will need to occasionally clean the coop and collect eggs, so be certain to build a door large enough to use. If you put windows in they need to face the south. This gives good ventilation when it is hot, and the sun will warm the eggs when it is cold.

Your creating components don’t need to be pricey. Scrap wood, plywood, and old buildings or sheds work fine for the needed supplies. Strategy out the region with the inner structure and maintain in mind that nesting boxes is going to be required for hens that lay eggs. 1 box is needed for each and every fourth or fifth bird. Six to ten inches of perch room is going to be required for every bird, too.

The next step is to buy any materials that you currently do not have. Chicken wire will be vital, for it encloses the yard of the chicken coop. Other materials will be necessary, too, like straw, feeders, and watering providers. Once you have your plan on paper and materials purchased, start to build the structure. Remember to build the coop with its front and yard facing south.

Also keep in mind that you do not want rain to gather in an onslaught over the door, so it is important that the roof has an adequate slope. Try to cover any windows with chicken wire so that you can further ensure predators remain out of the structure. A door latch is also necessary because it will allow you to secure it whenever you wish. The perches and nesting boxes need to be placed along the coop’s walls. Make certain that the perches are three to four feet above the ground, and that nest boxes have adequate straw inside.

After the structure is completed, enclose the outer yard with either chicken wire or fencing materials. The fence should be a minimum of four feet high. It is important that the fence is buried a foot below ground and tilted away from the yard area. This will assist in keeping predators away, for it will then be more difficult to dig beneath the fence. Birds of prey are also an issue, and to keep them at bay it is important that you cover the yard area with some type of netting. Planting high growing grass will also give your birds a place to hide.

Be sure that the watering providers and feeders are put up rather high, typically at about the chicken’s back. This will assist in making sure the water and food are not tainted by debris or dirt, and once you do that, you are done. Constructing chicken houses does not have to be a hard or taxing process. Merely adhere to the simple tips noted above and your birds will quickly be able to enjoy their new coop.

Caring For Your Juniper Bonsai Tree – Part I

One of the most popular of all the coniferous trees for creating amazing bonsai trees is the juniper tree. The Juniper tree can be found in many countries all around the world, and there are over fifty different varieties. The Juniper bonsai tree is a comparatively low upkeep tree which makes it one of the most popular bonsai trees for those just getting started in bonsai. The juniper bonsai tree can be grown both indoors and outdoors, however, poor humidity, lack of adequate light and dormancy will ultimately kill them. Juniper bonsai trees will tolerate short periods of being inside but if you really want it to thrive then keep it outside.

Depending on their stage of life juniper might show two different types of foliage. The juvenile plant will have needle-like foliage which will become scale-like foliage as a mature adult plant. Depending on the species, Junipers may show foliage that ranges in color from light greens to bluish greens to golden hues.

Among bonsai practioners, the Chinese Juniper tree is one of the most traditional and popular variety of junipers. Another very popular species for bonsai is the Needle Juniper. The sharply pointed needles is where the Needle Juniper gets its name.

Watering Your Juniper

Unlike some other types of bonsai trees Junipers in reality like to dry out between waterings. Feel the soil every day to estimate if it is time to water. Your bonsai needs water when the soil looks and feels dry on the surface. Put your finger into the soil to a depth of about one half to one inch. If the soil feels dry then you have to water your bonsai. Never permit your bonsai go altogether dry or it may suffer harm and die. A great way to water your juniper is to saturate the soil by placing it into a container of water, almost up to it’s rim, for between 15 and 30 minutes. After you pull it out of the water be sure to allow it to drain thoroughly so the roots don’t ever sit in water. If you can’t soak your plants using this method then water thoroughly from the top, wait a few minutes, and then water again. You may need to do this a number of times until the soil has been thoroughly soaked. The soil will go from being somewhat dry to completely soaked to fairly dry again during a complete waering cycle.

To help keep your juniper in top condition you should give a misting on a regular basis to keep up the humidity levels and keep the foliage dust-free. After repotting your juniper bonsai it is particularly crucial to give it frequent sprayings. Junipers are able to absorb adequate water through their foliage to keep from becoming dried out until the roots have healed sufficiently to support the tree themselves. Misting also minimizes excess transpiration and water loss on hot summer days.

Just the Right Amount of Sunlight

Outdoors are where most Juniper trees are typically grown. Ideally, a Juniper tree would prefer to get a good dose of morning sun, and then have shade in the afternoon. Junipers can also do well with filtered sunlight throughout the day.

Humidity

Almost all trees and plants love humid growing conditions. You can use a humidity tray beneath your potted juniper bonsai to maintain a higher level of humidity. Be sure not to let your bonsai pot sit in the water. After you’ve given your bonsai a good watering from the top the tray can also serve as a collection area for excess water. As mentioned previously, misting once a day will also help minimize transpiration, or the loss of water through the plants leaves or needles.

Feeding and Fertilizing

Use a high nitrogen fertilizer on your juniper bonsai tree in the spring and fertilize every three weeks, then use a more balanced fertilizer during the summer months, and then reduce the nitrogen for fall fertilizing. A diluted, half strength fertilizer will keep your roots from being damaged if you are using a chemical fertilizer.

Are you thinking of starting your personal hydroponics garden? There are a variety of ways you can use to implement this technique. In terms of the DIY hydroponics method, you are able to choose between quite simple strategies and elaborate ones. All of it is determined by what your plants flourish on.

What is DIY hydroponics? It’s a farming process that enables you to grow flowers, fruit, vegetables, and more, all with no solid ground. This is a especially powerful technique for spots where it’s too warm, too arid or too bumpy to plant whatever. There are quite a few positive aspects that hydroponic gardening carries over solid ground based growing – the major ones being that you will no longer need to be concerned about weeding, invasive plants, or pesticides, simply because all of these are present within the soil.

Rather than land, crops will be submerged with the roots in a highly treated mixture of water and plant nutrients. But, when it pertains to setting up the perfect workspace for your herbs, the smallest issue can cause your efforts to end up all wrong.

Sometimes, DIY hydroponics enables you to take more normal steps in maturing the crops. For instance, as an alternative to making use of grow lights, natural sunlight is a costless option. In a similar fashion, it’s not necessary that you buy high priced growth containers – a lot of DIY hydroponics garden builders get by just fine by utilizing jars, buckets, plus other sorts of typical domestic stuff.

But, in relation to other stuff, it’s best not to pinch when it comes to finances. This is especially true in the case of purchasing plant nutrient solutions. There are too many companies that provide less costly, low quality solutions that do hardly anything for the crops in any way. In worse situations, they might even damage the crops or lead to lesser produce.

Any DIY hydroponics gardener will tell you that excellent merchandise are more than worth their cost ultimately. For instance, plenty of stores that are more efficient but steep also provide products that help improve the essence of the crop, the dimensions and colour of blooms, and even growth speeds. Additionally, there are quite a few excellent fertilizers that will aid as well.

Also, getting pH tests and stabilizer solutions should not be something that you pay for by the least expensive dollar. When it comes to testing your plants for extra acidity and treating them, you can’t be too rigorous

Secrets Of Japanese Bonsai

To bonsai enthusiasts around the Earth, the art and discipline is much more than growing tiny trees in a pot. The literal transliteration of the Japanese word bonsai, meaning “to grow in a small tray”, cannot fully describe the depth of the art of bonsai.

To value Japanese bonsai you must understand each if its layers. For some there is a spiritual aspect, in addition to the gardening and the artistic aspect, that must be be brought together to make a true bonsai. Developing a connection with nature can be very fulfilling and peaceful. Bonsai cannot exist in a single or dual dimension.

Almost anyone can learn to be a good gardener. If you want to be a successful bonsai gardener you must know the basics of general gardening. A bonsai gardener needs to know the basics of plant biology. He will need to learn all about a tree’s branches, bark, trunk, and roots. A bonsai artist must tap into his college biology and botany class notes. Finally he must understand the seasonal changes that bring about changes in the growth cycle of plants. Strong and healty trees will be the result of bringing all of this knowledge together. And, without this understanding of horticulture it would be difficult, if not impossible, to apply techniques that are part of the artistic property of bonsai.

The artistic dimension of Japanese bonsai is that which will ultimately create the form, the living art that is pleasing to the eye, and which creates, in miniature, a replica of a natural tree. A bonsai artist must be familiar with the way a tree grows in the wild, that is subject to all of the elements of nature, and then see the possibility of duplicating that in miniature Trees that grow under natural conditions and subject to the elements have forms or shapes that the bonsai artist attempts to replicate which make up the classic styles of bonsai. In order to train a tree to be a bonsai the bonsai gardener must apply various methods, which may include grafting, pruning, and pinching, to achieve one of the traditional bonsai styles.

The final dimension of bonsai is the philosophical or spiritual dimension. I definitely think there must be a connection of some kind between the bonsai artist and the natural world. Some relate the philosophy of Taoism and Buddhism to bonsai, while others relate it to Zen philosophy. Regardless of which philosophy you subscribe to, remember that bonsai is not bonsai when the third dimension is absent from the work.

People from all over the world who have grown to love Japanese bonsai have developed a broader appreciation of the beauty of nature, and in doing so have either applied, or learned, a philosophy of life. happily, even those who don’t entirely understand the multiple elements of bonsai can still be moved by its beauty.

Building Great Chicken Coops At Home

Before building chicken coops, it is important to keep a few things in mind. First off, give your chickens some room. More room to spread their wings makes them feel comfortable and, well, normal. Since stress will adversely affect their tendency to lay eggs, make sure your chickens are happy and comfortable.

Providing more space also helps them feel normal by encouraging their instinct to peck at the ground. Spreading some feed in the morning can also help encourage the natural pecking instinct.

Hen chickens like security and comfort, so be certain your nesting box provides both. There is no one right way to build a nesting box; they change to suit local needs. Just be sure there is enough space for all your chickens. While some chickens are comfortable sharing a nest, there are always those who need their own private space. All hens will search out the most secluded, quiet and secure place to lay their eggs, so keep the nesting space away from the food area.

Give your chickens cut straw or some hay to mimic what they might find in the wild. Fluffy sawdust can work too, but try to avoid wood chips. Young chicks often mistake it for their food; eating too much wood can kill them. For mature chickens, however, wood chips can be a possible choice.

Then there is your own ease of use. The coop gets a lot of visits and you are going to have to carry a lot of eggs, so make sure you make them easy to collect. Making it easier on you also means you disturb your chickens less and that means less stress for them. Remember, the less they are stressed, the more eggs they will lay. A hinged lid on the nesting box is an elegant, simple solution. Or leave the nesting area open and collect from the front. Just be sure you don’t make it so big that you cannot easily reach the back corners.

Chickens want to be protected from the elements and also from predators. A strong roof that keeps off the rain and good walls that keep out the wind are necessary. If it gets really cold where you live, make sure you put a heat lamp in the nesting area. Design alone will give the chickens a feeling of security, but you can add to it by placing the coop in an area that is quiet and does not get a lot of traffic.

Follow these simple instructions and your coop is sure to be a winner. And with safe, comfortable chicken coops, your hens are sure to produce more eggs than you can waggle a wing at!

Six Reasons To Own A Small Greenhouse

For centuries, Home greenhouses, which have been in existence in one form or another, have been accepted as the best way to protect one’s plants from stormy weather conditions.   More and more, greenhouse builders understand the gardener’s needs so are building better greenhouses which are built to control internal temperatures, which can withstand high winds or heavy rains, and which, therefore, can be used even in the winter when snow abounds.

The most beneficial quality about owning a greenhouse is that you can control the temperature environment of your plants . . . which means that with a greenhouse you can significantly extend your planting time to earlier in the spring and harvesting time to later in the fall.

For example, because a greenhouse’s walls and ceilings are made of clear plastic, not only the air but also the soil inside the greenhouse will warm up faster.  That is why you can plant your seeds in early spring, and they will grow quite nicely without being negatively affected by cold weather.  If the outside temperature tips to near zero at night, your plants are safe and you do not need to worry about them.

Simply grow your plants in a greenhouse and those types of worries are over.

Consider also that even though the greenhouse’s air will naturally warm up because of the way the greenhouse is built, you can also add heat via a solar heating system or other type of heating if you wish.  This ability of holding in the heat is especially helpful if you use the greenhouse in the winter.

As a matter of fact, you can begin growing your plants inside your greenhouse earlier on in the year and keep your plants growing pretty much all year long if you want to.  Even if you live in an area where you must manage with a cooler climate, you can use a heater to keep the temperature in the greenhouse warmer, and the plants will never know how cold it is outside. Fourthly,  planting your garden in a greenhouse can also help you win the war against insects.  You see, when different types of insect invaders hatch, they look for young tender plants to land on. When you plant a month earlier than usual, by the time the insects come out looking for plants to feed on, your plants have grown beyond the tenderness they are looking for, so the insects bypass your garden.

Furthermore, an important consequence of the greenhouse acting as a barrier between the insects and your garden is that your vegetables will grow in a safer environment since you will be able to avoid using the toxic insecticides or pesticides; natural or home made sprays will be able to eliminate whatever insects do come into the greenhouse.  In turn, you will grow vegetables which will stay healthier.

Of course by adding companion planting techniques and great compost to nourish your plants, you will have a better chance to  grow lush, delicious, nutritious vegetables. So by having your plants grow inside a greenhouse is just a further step that helps keep your plants safe and healthy.

Artificial Trees for Much More Than Christmas

Generally we in the UK use artificial trees just once a year, at Christmas when we bring them into our homes for decoration. Nevertheless, artificial trees are becoming more and more popular the whole year through, rather than just at Christmas.

More and more people are beginning to recognise the benefits offered by artificial trees. They are also starting to see the superb quality of modern artificial trees, which are often indistinguishable from real ones.

One group of people with whom artificial trees have become popular are busy professionals. Looking after trees and plants, with all the watering, nurturing and re-potting that goes with it takes up too much time for many working people. As far as maintenance is concerned, regular gentle cleaning is all that artificial trees require. This is also the reason why artificial trees are a popular choice for use in hospitals and amongst the elderly and the disabled.

People who don’t necessarily have a great deal of space often choose to opt for artificial trees. This is because artificial trees do not grow. Anybody who buys one can relax in the knowledge that their tree will not begin taking up more space as time passes. It also means they are equally appropriate for indoor use as outside use.

Finally, artificial trees are perfect for people who are either not fantastic at gardening or whose gardens have problems. Simply put, this is because even the worst gardener in the world couldn’t kill an artificial tree. Furthermore, any fungal diseases that can affect trees will have no effect on artificial trees.

Artificial trees are very similar to the real thing and can be used to brighten a room or garden as well as the real thing. They offer all of this with barely any maintenance.

All Things Dealing With Blueberry Plants

But, they may be also baked into squash dishes and coffee cakes. For household use, fresh blueberries freeze nicely unwashed, dry and unsweetened. People love the way they don’t stick to each other after getting frozen like other berries, and pour out of their freezer containers like frosty marbles. My youngsters loved to freeze blueberries in little person freezer bags, then grab a bag during the coming months to snack on.

It is stated that in blueberry season, bears will eat absolutely nothing else except ripe blueberries, and that they are going to travel up to fifteen miles per day on an empty stomach to get a blueberry patch. Both bears and birds have lengthy loved the blueberry, leading one smaller blueberry farm in Southampton, Massachusetts to name itself “Bird Haven Blueberry Farm.” They shield their berries in the birds, and successfully market blueberries as U-pick, fresh-picked, frozen, and in jellies, jams and pies.

Because blueberries grow in the south towards north, most locations can come across forms that suit their residence garden or farm. It is recommended that no less than two varieties, regardless of ripening time, are grown for cross-pollination and improved fruit production. Yet, there are also a number of reports of single species creating well. Today, property gardeners and modest farmers can acquire highbush versions created on the commercial market selected for substantial size, ease of picking and productivity. “Rubel” is believed being among the 1st wild blueberries selected in the wild for commercial breeding, and will still be purchased and grown. It’s reportedly increased in anti-oxidants than other commercial blueberries. The European bilberry and also wild huckleberries can also be ordered for developing in gardens. While the plant varieties vary greatly in size, the regular gardener can anticipate from five to 15 pounds of berries each and every developing season.

Whether we know it or not, most of us are familiar while using genus Vaccinium as it has amongst its members a number of current or potential industrial crops, for instance blueberry, cranberry, bilberry and huckleberry. Vaccinium delavayi, however, is strictly ornamental and extremely unlikely being our up coming export success.
He was also responsible for this sort of well-known factories as Abies delavayi, Magnolia delavayi and Osmanthus delavayi reaching our gardens.
Vaccinium delavayi, a native of Burma and south-west China, can be a hardy evergreen shrub with small, rounded leaves that happen to be tough and leathery. In spring it creates clusters of small, bell-shaped to virtually globular, white flowers that open from pink buds. The flowers are really very much inside the style of Pieris, Gaultheria, Andromeda and several other closely connected genera from the erica family.
Pretty as the flowers are, the real appeal of this tiny blueberry lies within the deep bluish-black berries that follow. Although it appears a shame to select the berries, you may as well mainly because the birds may have no this sort of reservations.
It really is an perfect specimen for a rockery or partially shaded corner. It grows to about 45cm higher × 60cm wide and may be kept trimmed to a small mound. However, any pruning will adversely impact either the flowering or fruiting.
The smaller ornamental species are most at household when grown with other erica spouse and children plants such as dwarf rhododendrons, evergreen azaleas, ericas, callunas and pieris.
The native New Zealand Gaultheria species are interesting vegetation to combine with Vaccinium delavayi.
Other smaller native berrying plants, especially individuals of the epacris family, also make fine companions. An alpine rockery with excellent berrying forms of Pentachondra pumila, Leucopogon fraseri, Cyathodes empetrifolia, Gaultheria crassa and Vaccinium delavayi could be complete of interest and colour during the year.
Try seeking inside the perennials together with amongst the shrubs, as it is usually sold at a really smaller dimension and tends to get lumped in with the rockery perennials.

In order to possess an ideal growing grass, it is important to know the most beneficial time for planting grass seeds. There are a high percentage of lawn owners that basically get baffled with the query of ‘when to plant grass seed?’ Due to the lack of knowledge, they consider incorrect decisions and plant the seed in an unsuitable environment and season. Hydroseeding is a procedure that requires mixing seed, fertilizer and mulch into a form of slurry which is then sprayed around an area on which you would like grass to grow. There are many advantages to this procedure above other conventional methods. Let’s consider a check out hydroseeding costs.

The procedure of hydroseeding is drastically cheaper in fee than sodding in essentially all circumstances. Because sodding consists of intensive preparation, the costs start to rack up even previous to you get any grass around the ground at all.

Seasons for Grass Plantation

The devices used for hydroseeding – referred to as hydro mulchers – make the planning course of action simple. The sod is incredibly expensive, even though the seed slurry is only a fraction of the price. The materials alone can charge anyplace from 8 cents to 30 cents per square foot. If you add inside amount of labor that is required to set up the sod, the total price will come to 14 cents to 60 cents per square foot.

You also possess the choice to go for planting seed through early fall. At this time with the year, the temperature is comparatively moderate, and thus, it requires less watering. At the beginning from the plantation, tend not to overlook to utilize fertilizer to the seeds. After close to three to four weeks, utilize more of it in order that the cheaper younger roots are in a position to get the needed nutrients from the fertilizer. The weed manage methods need to only take when the grass is mowed for a minimum of 3 times, and make sure the seed germinate ahead of the onset of freezing temperatures.

The Joy Of Planting Your Own Italian Herb Garden

Growing your own tomatoes is so very rewarding. When you have your own Italian herb garden, you can see the difference between the great products you grow, and the products that are sold to you from the supermarket. From the store tomatoes are pink, and somewhat artificially ripened. Your tomatoes, as well as the herbs you grow will seem so fresh and delicious, you will wish you were in a place that you can do it all year long.

If you do a lot of cooking, you will want to plant the herbs that you use the most. Along with your vegetables of choice, your herbs should be planted in the garden at the appropriate distance from each other, and it helps to label them, as well. Since they are going to be eaten, be sure not to add pesticides. Use an all-organic fertilizer. If you are not sure if your fertilizer is organic, you can use the soil from your backyard mixed with rabbit manure or chicken manure for best results. You can also add your own mix of various organic amendments.

Should you cook Italian foods, you’ll want plenty of parsley, basil, thyme, and  oregano. Should you like East Indian food and Mexican, you’ll require a great  deal of cilantro. Try to maintain the cilantro separate from the parsley,  because they appear the same and also you don’t wish to mix them up, because  they have really various tastes. You may want some peppers to go together with  your herbs, too. You will find sweet bell peppers of all colors that you simply  can plant, together with some hot ones.

Dill is excellent in potato salads and deviled eggs. It looks like a really  delicate plant, but don’t let it fool you. In some cooler places it grows like  a weed, and it doesn’t even require direct sunlight. Should you like having  lamb for dinner, you’ll wish to grow some woody rosemary plants. And sage is  fantastic for soups and stews.

For climates where they are very long summers, you may be lucky enough to grow enough herbs to share with friends and family. Maybe you will open up a vegetable and herb stand for fun as well as for extra cash. If your local markets need a variety of herbs, they may be interested in buying from you, as well. And do not forget the food pantries. They always need more food for those who are down on their luck.

If your summers are short, you will want to grow as much as you can, and there are many things you can do to use your home grown produce for the rest of the year. Many of them can be frozen for later use. The peppers can be cut up into pieces, placed in baggies, and they will last all year in the freezer for whenever you need them. Hot peppers can be dried and hung in decorative bunches. They can be added to vinegars, placed in decorative bottles and given as gifts.

Some herbs, like basil, are better frozen along with a sprinkling of olive oil. It keeps them just a bit moist and separates them better when they are ready for use. Sage can be dried on the stalk and used just that way. You can place it is a small vase and use it as you need it.

The Advantages Of Creating Herb Gardens Outdoors

There are lots of benefits to having herb gardens.  They can create a wonderful aroma when all the different smells mix together and catch your nose as you walk past; they give you an instant and ongoing source of fresh herbs to use whenever you need them; and they are also relatively easy to grow.

But if herb gardens are your cup of tea, you will need to decide whether you want one indoors or outdoors.  Indoor ones are good, but if you have a reasonable size garden then having herb gardens outdoors can be your best choice.

When do you start?

The best place to start is by having a look round to see where herb gardens could be created.  If space is short, why not have more than one and make each individual one smaller? You can even use window boxes to grow herb gardens right outside your kitchen window.  This is ideal and has the advantage of not only being close to the place where you do all your cooking, but it gives you a wonderful aroma every time you open your kitchen window too.

You can create herb gardens in regular flower beds, but you should be aware that some herbs can spread further than others, and are more aggressive as a result.Mint would be a good plant to keep away from the other herbs as they are quite invasive and may take over the others.  For this reason, if you want to put it in a bed, make sure you plant it inside a pot and sink the pot into the ground first. This way you can avoid the strangling of other plants and keep in within a small area.

Choosing Your Herbs

There are a wide variety of choices when it comes to deciding what your herb gardens are going to contain.  Do some research on herb garden information and find which herbs you tend to like and which ones are the most versatile as well.

Parsley is a good item to have in herb gardens as well as chives and mint. Most herbs tend to be the same shade of green, but they all have their own shapes which is why it would be good to choose a combination of those that would look good together.  Chives are tall and straight so they are good to position right at the back. With practice, you are sure to have an herb garden that looks great and tastes just as good.

A Guide To Greenhouse Operations

A greenhouse is a plastic or glass structure that has a glass or plastic covering, and it is useful to grow plant life.  The glasshouse obtains the solar rays which heat the plants, dirt and other things inside it, and the walls and roof don’t permit the heated air to release without difficulty.  A garden greenhouse can be as big as a substantial building, or no more than a little shed.  The garden greenhouse may either be the plastic material variety or a glass garden greenhouse.

There are numerous facets of green house administration which includes caring for the heat necessity, diagnosing food deficiencies, growing pH and media, managing soluble salt, fertilizing crops, monitoring the irrigation water quality, managing and recycling irrigation runoff, treating irrigation water and the like.  For most greenhouse makers, the heating system is a major concern because the expense involved in buying and running the heat products are very high and because of that it will involve an efficient design.  Coal, oil and gas, are the primary sources of alternative power utilized in the greenhouse, and the options are largely influenced by availability and overall costs.  For the commercial greenhouse production, there are many forms of environmental controllers and thermostats available.

Just about the most crucial aspects of creating the garden greenhouse plants is to provide the ample nutrition.   The consistency of fertilizer applications has considerable impact on the growth of plants in the garden greenhouse.  Sometimes, the nourishing substances are added in at the peak periods of growth, but frequent feed of soluble fertilizer at each and every irrigation can also be good for optimum plant development.  For you to maintain the optimum development of vegetation, checking out the dietary deficiencies is extremely crucial, and signs and symptoms mostly are dependent upon plant varieties, point of growth and a handful of additional controlling aspects.

The quality of water applied directly affects the output of nursery and greenhouse crops.  High soluble salt in irrigation water at times call for extreme action.  So as to optimize fertility and lessen the adverse influences of high pH/alkalinity within the water, it may be addressed by injecting acid.  The garden greenhouse field in continually challenged by the prospective toxic contamination of surface area and groundwater, and farmers seriously rely on the employment of pesticide sprays and fertilizers so as to deliver top quality crops.

The existence of extreme soluble salt is among the significant constraining components in greenhouse crops output, however, if the dissolvable salts are handled accurately, their effect on the crops can be lessened.  Creating a simple yet effective irrigation supervision strategy involves a balance between growing medium and the requirements of the plant.  There is always a pressure to reduce the use of water that is forcing the growers to utilize mixes capable of controlling significant volumes of water, yet, the possible hazards of over watering are extremely serious.

To hasten the composting process, turn the contents in your natural organic fertilizer bin each and every two weeks. If you’ve a non tumbling bin you ought to, for hygiene factors, wear a mask and gloves if you turn the pile specifically throughout the initial couple of weeks. Note that some kinds of kitchen leftovers decay slowly and they have a tendency to give off bad stench while decaying so make certain that you cover your nose and mouth whenever you turn the pile. Tips On Seasonal Care For Your Bonsai Plant

The small stature of your bonsai trees doesn’t change the fact that they are still just like their full-size cousins, which means that they will still go through the changes in appearance as the seasons change. And the changing of the seasons require that the care you provide your bonsai also change as the trees move through their cycle of growth and dormancy.

Spring Care

Spring is the season of new growth in your bonsai plant and trees. They will begin to awaken after their winter rest. All gardeners, including bonsai gardeners, know that this is the busiest time of the year.

One routine springtime task for the bonsai gardener is to re-pot and prune the roots of his bonsai trees. Make sure that you don’t wait too long to get this task accomplished because it may be too late by the time the plant’s buds break open.

You should try to prune any dead branches from your bonsai tree during the springtime as well, before they are hidden by leaves. Springtime is when new shoots will appear and you need to be sure to cut them back.

If you have left any training wires on your plants over the winter you want to be sure to check to make sure that springtime growth is not resulting in the wires cutting into the tree’s bark.

You should never apply full strenght fertilizer during the spring, especially to plants or trees whose roots have recently been pruned because this can cause terrible damage to the roots.

Summer Care

Your outdoor plants are going to experience their maximum rate of growth during the long sunny days of summer. Any root pruning and repotting should have been completed in late winter or early spring. It’s OK to continue pruning, pionching, and cutting back new shoots during the summer months. The shoots of deciduous trees, like the chinese elm bonsai, should be cut back to one or two pairs of leaves, and the buds on conifers should be carefully plucked as they begin to swell.

Now is the time to apply wire if you want to train and shape your deciduous bonsais. Summer is a good time to remove the wires that you applied last year if you are confident that the branches and trunk are set in their desired positions.

The moisture level in your bonsai plants and trees need to be checked frequently to make sure they are never allowed to dry out completely. You may find that it is requisite to water your bonsai plants more than once a day if the weather is extremely hot.

Summer is the best time to fertilize your trees, and you should use a high nitrogen mix. You will want to continue fertilizing all summer and into early fall.

Fall Care

Fall is the time of year when the rate of growth in most plants begins to slow down. Most deciduous trees, like the Japanese Maple Bonsai or the Chinese Elm Bonsai, develop marvelously colored leaves at this time of year, just before they eventually fall, leaving the trees bare during the winter.

It’s OK to prune juniper and pine trees in the fall, but when you prune deciduous trees it will cause the tree to burst with new growth. This should be avoided because the new growth uses precious food supplies that the tree will need during winter.

If you had applied wire during the spring to train your tree now is a good time to remove it, giving the tree a rest during winter.

When your deciduous bonsai plants have lost all of their leaves their need for water is substantially reduced because the trees are entering a stage of dormancy. Only water sparingly when the soil feels dry. Pine and junipers and other conifers continue to have leaves during the winter, from which water can be lost through transpiration, so you will need to continue watering them all winter long.

It is recommended that you harden off the current years growth by applying 1-2 applications of nitrogen-free fertilizer to your bonsai plant beginning around mid-autumn.

Winter Care

Bonsai trees will not require a lot of care during the winter months as they are in a stage or dormancy.

As your trees sit dormant during the winter months you can begin planning where you will be taking your bonsai during the next growing season, knowing that someday ot will be a perfect littel tree, a living piece of art.

Basically virtually any greenhouse you discover that is made for quick and easy set up, then that may be considered as a portable greenhouse. You’ll be able to generally find these at any standard greenhouse store. The very best thought is to look for one which necessitates almost no set up time, so anything at all between 10 minutes to a 1 / 2 hr would be best.

If you’re looking for a portable greenhouse, for whichever cause that could be, you’re probably not excited about consuming over that period of time to set the thing up every time. Always pick up a portable garden greenhouse before acquiring it or at best take a peek and learn how much it weighs. Just about the most crucial issues to take into consideration in a portable greenhouse is a light weight. This way you’re sure it’s going to be easy to carry rather than a massive hefty inconvenience to get around.

An additional concept is to obtain a collapsible portable garden greenhouse. This is normally a lot more well suited for people with a more restrictive spending budget because these in many cases are a lot less pricey. A majority of these cost about $400 on average. When compared to couple grand you would spend on a regular size garden greenhouse either price isn’t too terrible.

A Basic Description Of Various Greenhouse Farming Options

Vegetables, ornamental plants and flowers can all be cultivated in greenhouses, if the climate conditions don’t permit outdoor gardening. Yet, not every garden enthusiast can afford to create the greenhouse of his/her dreams, and for that reason green house gardening becomes a privilege in so many instances. Here is what best defines such an occupation in the most general lines possible.

1.The green house is a chamber of plastic or glass that allows the light to get through to the plants while providing enough warmth to allow for the harmonious development regardless of the exterior climate. Green house gardening is difficult by the high number of activities necessary to keep the green house operational.

2.Containers, hanging baskets and standard beds can be widely used for green house gardening objectives. Regardless of whether the facility is profitable or decorative, the dimensions matters very little. The equipment that’s now available should enable the hobby or expert gardener to make the appropriate choices for cultivating all sorts of flowers, plants, fruit trees or vegetables throughout the year.

3.There are lots of purposes for green house gardening. Maintaining the productive nature of seasonal crops all year round is a major achievement and many gardeners aim at it. Others only want to cultivate crops which are sensitive to the cold temperature or they attempt to get good seeds. And finally, a warm green house could be customized purely in  the cultivation and display of unusual plants.

There are three types of green house gardening usually depending on the temperature of the manipulated environment inside the chamber.

-An inexpensive method is cold green house gardening. It works good in summer time as the heat trapped inside the chamber accelerates the growth of the vegetation. Too much humidity could nonetheless be detrimental for plants.

-A far more popular type of gardening here is cool green house gardening. Normally a steady temperature is maintained by using some sort of heating system. With an interior temperature of 45F, the majority of plants will survive all through the winter

-Warm green house gardening is conducted at temperatures of 55F or greater and it is usually specific to the farming of exotic plants, vegetables and fruit. Warm greenhouses usually serve for professional purposes and they call for a substantial expenditure in technology.

Lots of other features can be recognized for all these categories however they ought to be studied in particular with all the difficulties that derive from them.

I really love writing and submitting articles on the topic of gardening and landscaping, but I additionally love to publish web content regarding different topics likewise. One such topic is lawn care business. In the event you would like to have more info on this topic pay a visit to http://www.gardeninglawncare.com/lawn-care-business/

Everything You Need To Know About Getting Rid Of Snails And Slugs

Snails and slugs are a menace. Beward if you live in a damp area of the country as they thrive wherever there is moisture. Even in relatively dry areas snails and slugs can be found early in the morning.

Your vegetables and flowers can be beautiful and healthy but let the snails discover them and suddenly your garden is full of sad plants with holes in their leaves. Those slimy, fat creatures appear when you don’t expect them. The trail of slimy goo left behind becomes a sign for every other snail around to follow to the feast.

When you attempt to track down the snails, they have already returned to their little hideaways to make babies – thousands of them. To make matters worse, this happens over and over again. The nasty creasures hatch in two to three weeks and start munching immediately! It takes no time for them to become full grown and lay their own eggs.

Look for their eggs – they look like tiny clusters of whitish jelly-filled BB-sized balls. Quick! Shake salt on them as fast as you can. They will be destroyed before they hatch.

Each year, snails and slugs grow. . .and grow . . .and grow. They will eat and grow, eat and grow. Stop them now.

Gardening in a backyard greenhouse can be a deterrent to snails and slugs. If you’re thinking of buying a small greenhouse snails will have a harder time getting to your precious plants.

If they can sneak in when you’re not looking however, they will lay their eggs inside. That slimy trail is a beacon for you to follow! Peek in all the dark corners where there is moisture.

Whenever you find any, you have many weapons you can use.

Oat bran does not do well in their digestive tract and will kill them when they eat it.

Cracked eggshells will cut the snails as they slime their way across the sharp edges.

Snails and slugs aren’t too bright. They love the smell of beer but they can’t swim. Put bowls of beer around your plants and the snails will fall in and drown.

If you plant certain herbs they will repel snails and slugs. Choose your herbs wisely and in the close quarters of your greenhouse, snails and slugs will stay away. Lavender, lemon balm, mint, rosemary and thyme will all help deter the snails.

Be vigilant and you won’t have to ever use commercial herbicides. Plant sufficient herbs in your greenhouse and most snails will run away. If you get a serious infestation however and need to take drastic measures, use all the above solutions at the same time. You’re smarter than they are. You don’t have to resort to poison.

If all else fails, buy a greenhouse and get a hedgehog or a duck. No more snails.

How To Pick A Good Gardener

If you want your garden landscaping, you need to find a  landscape gardener. Of course you could always do it yourself, but few people have the knowledge and expertise that is necessary here to come up with a proper and pleasing design. When it comes to finding a landscape gardener, there are a few things in particular that you are going to want to look for, and a few issues you will need to keep in mind, to ensure that you choose the  best gardener for you and your needs.

Interview a few on the phone. Ask whether you can see examples of their work to ensure that you like their style. You should ask if they have any examples of the work they have done in the past and maybe if there are any projest that you might be abel to visit , also ask if they have had any of their work published be it in magazines or books.

Some landscape gardeners cover a variety of services including turf laying, fencing, decking, and patio laying and planting. Others however only specialise in one area. If you are looking for an all-round garden landscaper then you must quiz your prospective provider as to what they can actually do – properly and professionally.

Once you have spoken to them on the phone you should have a vague idea how much the project is going to cost, at this point it is advisable to decide what you maximum budget is going to be before you get formal estimates that way you can manage you expectations as well as being in a more confident position to haggle.

Invite potential gardeners around to you house, so you can visually show them what it is you are looking for. Once you have told them what you are after in the back drop of your property they should be able to give you an estimate on both material and labour costs.

Finally it is always a good idea to select a gardener who you find it easy to communicate with as it will make life simpler to make yourself understood when explaining you vision for you garden.

Add Some Wow To Your Yard With A Water Feature And Without A Pond

There is nothing lovelier than the sounds and sights of having a water garden in your own backyard. For a few of the people this suggests creating a pond or a stream. For some these are not viable options. They might have got kids and worry about the basic safety~safeness~protection} of getting a water garden, or perhaps that they might not have area to put it in.

Nevertheless people simply lack time to give the pool the attention it will need to keep it from getting stagnant and smelly. Many of those people would still like to have the ambience associated with a water part in his or her back yards, so they opt for pondless water features Maybe you don’t know very well what a pondless water feature is actually, as the phrase alone won’t seem to make plenty of sense. They’re things like water fountains and bubblers. You can even build a pondless waterfall that can cascade down several levels making that unique splashing water sound, however when the water reaches the bottom, it disappears in to a bed of stones without making a pond.

These varieties of features are much less difficult to maintain than pond ecosystems are usually. For a pool environment you need 5 necessary features : rocks and gravel, a biological filtration system, a skimmer, aquatic plants, and fish. When something within the system gets out of whack, your pool life may die, the water become scummy and murky, and also the whole area can start to smell. Not so with pondless water features. Many of them need no maintenance in any way. This is an especially good thing for folk who travel a lot, because they don’t have to fret about keeping up their water feature while they’re away. You can give any yard plenty of pizazz by installing some type of pondless water feature in your water garden.

Birds are naturally interested in water, and, for whatever reason, folk appear to head towards the sound of flowing water, too. There are even smaller fountains that you can sit on a deck or a patio to offer a similar ambiance. Fountains, bubblers, and various types of water features are either available to be put into operation immediately, or you can buy kits and construct something more intricate yourself. Whatever technique you choose, you’re sure to be delighted with the extra charm it adds to your landscape.

Easy Maintenance Herb Gardens

Gardening usually means extensive efforts and continuous expenses for most people. But you could actually have two herb gardens even with small spaces. The secret lies in pots. This is called container gardening.

You can have all sorts of containers – varied pots, galvanized steel or tin pails, old cook wares from casseroles to bowls, including the broken ones, old tires and just about any empty container you have.

When you have the containers and the herbs, you can start your petite home herb gardens. But first, you have to thoroughly clean the containers, even if you are using brand new pots. They have to be dirt free so as to not allow early formation of moss, molds and unhelpful bacteria.

Below are two ways you can utilize the container gardening technique.

Indoor Herb Garden

Most annuals are suitable for indoor gardens. These are basil, anise, borage, geranium, chives, and rosemary. These herbs are usually low maintenance. They just need well tilled soil, minimal exposure to the sun and regular watering. Have them placed near window sills and door openings. However, each plant has different tolerance with sunlight. Full sunshine is needed by some plants once in a while, like geraniums. It would be best that you post schedule or a timetable when to put your herbs outside. When growing herbs in pots indoors, it would be best to choose the lightweight ones, so whenever you need to bring them out, you can easily carry them.

Also, there are several ways to minimize space consumption. You can make use of metal or plastic chains to hang your pots on your window railings. You could also place the containers on one side of your counter top or where it is most accessible to you when you are cooking.

For aromatic herbs, place them in tables where the most traffic in your house goes through. It would be even a refreshing centerpiece for your dining table. Instead of potpourri, why not use aromatic herbs in your bathroom. You will notice that the scent of the plants goes off when your steam goes off as well. This is because of the herbs’ essential oils reacting to some heat. Also, place a small pot of any aromatic herb that could help you relax before you go to sleep. A popular choice would be the lavender.

Outdoor Herb Garden

An outdoor garden is usually associated with vast lawns and wide-stretching backyards. Even if your outdoor lot is as small as a storage room, you still could have a nice outdoor garden. Most perennials and evergreens are suitable for outside environments. They need as much sunlight as they could have.

You can use old tires and variedly sized pots to create a tiered outdoor garden. Have the biggest pots placed in the bottom and them pile up to the smallest pots. This will give your herbs a good position. Keep in mind, the big pots don't necessarily need to contain the big plants. Herbs with small root growth can be grown in clusters for more thickness. Choose deep pots for those with sporadic and expansive root growth. Place them in the middle of the tier. You can use any pot to contribute to the aesthetics of your outdoors.

With the container technique, having diverse herb gardens is truly possible to work for your comfort and convenience.

Picking A Great Gardener

Improving your garden  by hiring a landscaper can be a big investment, so it makes sense to spend some time and effort to choose the right landscape gardener  to help you with the process. This will help ensure you spend no more than necessary, get your landscaping done on schedule, and end up with a garden you are really proud of.

One of the first things that you will need to determine before you find a landscaping designer is your budget, how much money you have available to work with. This is important because of course the cost of landscaping designers will be different from one to another, so you will need to know how much money you can spend to determine whether or not you will be able to afford a certain landscaping designer.

Once you have decided on your budget ask friends and family if the have any recommendations, not only will this give you the opportunity to have a look at one of gardeners previous projects, but also let you find out what the gardener was like to deal with as far as communicating is concerned.

If you don’t get any recommendations make sure you ask any gardener you contact for testimonials as well as if they have any photos of previous projects they have completed, or sites you might be able to visit in person.

Talk to a few gardeners on the phone tell them the sort of thing you are looking for and they should be able to tell you how much it’s likely to set you back. Once you’ve done that get a couple of them around to your property so they can have a real look and give you a more accurate estimate.

Finally, when you’ve decided which gardener is the one for you avoid paying cash up front; it is much wiser to set up projects milestones and a payment schedule. Only make the final payment when your landscaping project is 100% complete and you are satisfied with the work.

How To Plant Or Re-pot An Orchid

Orchids are one of the most beautiful and best adored flowers in the whole wide world. Because of that they are becoming more and more popular each year. Now what if you just bought your first orchid or obtained one as a gift and you do not comprehend how to look after it or how to re-pot it when the need arises? The same technique that is used for planting an orchid will be used when re-potting one.

When you ought to plant or re-plant your orchid the elementary thing you require to do is to acquire a decent potting medium. Do not make the slip of using the unexceptional dirt from your garden. This is the most usual fault that so many people are guilty of. Do not use common dirt for your orchids since most orchids do not develop in soil in their natural environment so potting them in one will almost certainly kill them.

Orchids thrive when planted in a fibrous and porous medium. From time to time you might find growers trying to use materials like cork or bark or even coconut shells. The biggest problem you will have with materials of this kind is that they can rapidly decay. When this happens you will have to repot your orchid. OK so there is nothing incorrect with repotting but if you keep doing it your orchids will hurt. Therefore, I would suggest that you pay a visit to your local horticulture centre to acquire some pre-prepared orchid potting mix. Now if you are just beginning to grow orchids in particular, the proper thing for you to do is to go to your nearest garden center and buy suitable growing media.

Now it is time for you to choose the correct pot. The color and style are, of course, up to you but the size of the pot will have to be determined by the size of the plant. A lot of beginners just want to make sure that the pot isn´t too small, so they end up using a pot that is way too large. Oh dear, that is a large fault. Your orchid’s roots with no trouble must be capable of reaching to just about all of the moisture in the pot. If the pot is too magnanimous, that will simply be inconceivable so make sure you get it right.

The easiest means to acquire an estimation of what the correct size pot should be is to see other orchids in a store or your local gardening center. Find some orchids that are approximately the same size as yours and you will see the correct size of the pot.

Now we are all set it is time to get to work on planting your gorgeous orchid. Now fill up the pot with your orchid potting mix and make a hole in the heart of the container. You will make it simpler if you do not make use of all of your potting material at first go. Filling a pot to about half full is a safe get-go.

Now take your orchid and take it from its first pot. This can be more complicated than it might sound. Now continue slowly and with care since some of the roots will have adhered to the interior of the pot. Eventually you might be forced into using a knife to cut those roots that just won´t let go. It is acceptable to do this but be certain not to do it too much.

When you have taken the orchid from the primary pot, just place it in a new one. Now you may fill up the rest of the orchid pot with the remainder of the potting material and tap it simply a bit. You do not desire to pack the pot but you also do not desire it to be too loose. Now, you´re more or less done. It is likely that you will have to do something to hold up the bulbs that are too frail to stand on their own. You can do this by placing a stake into the potting material, being careful not to distress the roots and then tieing it with a piece of string.

That´s it. If you carried out the procedure above, you will have just planted or re-potted your orchid, so  very well done.

Tree Trimming

One of the sayings that are going around regarding tree trimming is that you simply do it once your tools are generally sharp. It is, just like several of other sorts of common things, quite wrong. Or, to be more precise, it can apply to cutting dead or partially broken branches, but not to all the rest of the situations when tree trimming is required. In the case of flower trimming, for example, timing is most important.

While it’s normal for many trees to blossom one year prior to they bloom, you have to know the blooming won’t occur if you don’t cut the blossom buds of the tree. The most effective occasion to do that is within 3 weeks occasion from once the tree finished blooming and the reason for which is which otherwise you might minimize the particular buds which contain next year`s bouquets, that is certainly not advised. Several kinds have adequate tree lowering instances; maples, for instance, are bleeding if you trim them in late autumn or early spring.

It is just a matter of whether you like their feature you aren’t (the shrub does not experience neither acquire from the bleeding, experts demonstrate); the actual dogwoods trimmed in April or in May have more chances of getting the so called dogwood borer, which is an insect that attacks the vascular system of the tree after it gets inside it so you might want to be able to prevent that time with regard to lowering it.

The perfect occasion intended for tree trimming in the event that associated with oaks is whenever you wish outdoors April through October, and the reason behind that’s the high rate of cases of Wilt disease attacks in that precise period of time.

A particularly delicate aspect of tree trimming is topping. In the case of some species like the Silver Maple, after about 20 years of existence, tree trimming becomes a must (or the alternative to removing the whole tree).so called though the things you must be cautious with regards to when taking that option are the aspect the tree is going to have in a few years (also known as the appearance of a hat rack) and the necessity of repeating the process of tree trimming more and more often.

Tropical Gardens

Tropical gardens are an extremely popular type of garden as they create the atmosphere of an exotic holiday destination.

.

I am a huge fan of the tropical garden.

.

What you need to remember is that for properly done tropical gardens to thrive you need to be in the correct climate, and you are going to have a very large water bill. You will need to create mist areas, and other areas that have almost a constant supply of running or dripping water to allow these plants to get the maximum benefit and growth out of the garden.

.

You will find that very often a good idea is the do one of these gardens in a atrium or greenhouse as then you will have a better control over your environment.

.

In an atrium you will very likely have walls surrounding the area and this will allow you to have sprayed and sprinkler systems in place that can run on timers therefore creating the correct amount of humidity.

.

What I have seen done very successfully is to have a tightly designed area with only a small area in the middle with a small table and chair setup. This allows you to have very peaceful tea times, or great evening drinks or very private romantic dinners. All the above choices will make the idea worth the effort that it will require to maintain the tropical zone.

.

Please remember that if you have such an area right within your house, you must be sure that you have the correct damp controls in place as it would not be so cool if your house starts to rot from your great idea.

.

A good suggestion is that if you are already going to have running water and mist nipples spraying all the time it gives you the perfect opportunity to have a waterfall or some type of water feature in your design. If you have a very large drainage area under the entire garden you could recycle the water and have it running in a constant loop.

.

Depending on the space that you have and naturally your budget, you could have anything from a double-storied-almost-real tropical area to a much smaller water fountain type indoor plant effect. I guess I do not have to say which I would prefer, but let me just say that I am a moss and algae addict. All the thousands of different moss’s and lichens that thrive so well in a damp atmosphere would be all over the area that I set up. I would go so far as to design all the seating out of cement so that I could “grow” moss up onto everything.

Natural gardens

Natural gardens or as I rather call them indigenous gardens are brilliant.

.It is so obviously the best version of a home garden that I am amazed that we all do not keep up the practice. Sadly we do not, and there are a lot of good reasons why we stop applying the basic gardening principles in this regard.
Firstly to properly explain – a natural garden, or indigenous garden, is a garden that only uses plants that are from that local region. The grasses and plants to the trees and shrubs that are natural to your local area are the best plants suited to you area.

.

Does it not make the most sense that then the very best option as far as plant choices go for your garden are these varieties?

.

You will have a massive saving in your water bill as all the local shrubs and plants are adapted to the weather cycles from your area. The maintenance that you will need to do in your garden will be greatly reduced and you will gain more time to sit happily in the shade. A Garden that has only got indigenous plants and trees in it will also require a lot less maintenance.

.

Obstacle number one

Local nurseries and experts very often are not very clued up on which are exactly the local plants and shrubs from your area. You will find that you would be better off consulting a botanist from you local university or perhaps even your local horticulturist at your local municipality.

.

Either way it will probably require a little book or other research, but will be worth the effort. Remember it need not be 100% accurate as it is the general concept that you are looking for.

.

Obstacle number two

Once you have found out all the details and the lists of the necessary plants in the design that you need, you are going to have to actually find the plants in question. A lot of the time these plants are actually considered weeds by the local people and you are unlikely to find then for sale either as seeds or seedlings.

.

Obstacle number three

This obstacle is you. I am so aware that as a gardener I have a long list of my favorite plants and so has my wife. So it becomes logical that for the greater part of the time our gardens consist of the plants that we both like. Some plants I call kicking plants, and my wife will not let me near those just in case I am not joking about the name.
But when it comes right down to it, you are going to struggle to make choices that will be ones that keep your old favorites out of your new garden.

.

Just before I leave you, I need to just point out (or repeat myself) that you will get a massive jump in the local insect and birdlife if you do an indigenous garden. If you are a bird lover then the fastest way to have all manner of feathered friends breeding right in front of your eyes is to do the very trees and plants that they love.
I live in Africa, and almost any of our thorn trees will acquire a tenant very quickly within a year or two from being a sapling.

Gardening with or for children

Today’s topic is very important as our children are the future farmers of this world. We are responsible for the nurturing of that caring spirit that needs to be developed within every child.

.

I live in a country that was sadly disrupted by apartheid and this caused entire generations of children to grow up without proper adult care, which in my opinion resulted in some massive problems that are now bad habits in today’s adults.

.

It is visible in small things like littering or poor personal hygiene habits. We are so important in those initial values that a child needs to have placed carefully into their education that we can only blame ourselves if the next generation cuts down the last remaining few trees. We set the example by cutting down all the initial forests.
Wow, sorry, I am a little passionate about tree killers.

.

Ok, what we need to consider on this subject is the fact that children learn best from two very definite methods.

.

METHOD ONE _ LEARN BY EXAMPLE

.

Method one is they learn by following your example, if you have bad habits in your gardening methods them you can be sure that your children will pick up those habits and forever think that it is the correct way to do that specific task.
The more you are conscious on what you are doing that your child can see and learn from the better off your child will be in regards to good gardening habits.
Er, Pay attention as this naturally covers all aspects of your life.

.

METHOD TWO – LEARN BY DOING

.

This is a much nicer and more fun way to teach your child the joys of gardening. You must adapt the system and remember that some of the items are not really for the youngest of children. You will have to decide when the correct time is to get your child actively involved in your garden. Sitting on your bum eating great big mouthfuls of sand does not qualify as gardening.

.

To start off here I also need to point out that you need to give some thought as to what the child can do that gives fairly fast results. It takes time and maturity for someone to develop the patience that comes from watching things grow.
A child will naturally expect a seed planted yesterday to have grown fully by today. Certain types of beans and seeds do germinate really quickly and it might pay you to get the child interested with something like that from the very beginning. I always place a seed that is fast growing between two layers of cotton wool as this gets great visible growth and you should be able to transplant it into the ground fairly easily.

.

I do suggest that you do quite a few as you might not get them all to grow and your first lessons might get a little derailed. It also will give the child an opportunity to really do the actual planting and not have to watch you doing it.
I ask this – please do not presume that a child’s natural tendency towards wanting to please you makes them the perfect fetch and carry helper. When a child is young you are welcome to encourage them to pass you stuff, but as they get older resist the temptation to simply have them as a small laborer.

.

As the child gets older it will pay you to section off a bit of your garden and allow that piece of turf to “belong” to the child fully. You will need to use your best diplomacy here to make sure that they get good advice from you before they choose what they want to plant every season. Growing ice-cream is a lot harder than you think. However if you can get them to grow the vegetables that they like you are off to a winning start and when they are happily eating their own carrots they will be very pleased with themselves.

.

Never make the garden a chore. The minute that you punish your child for not taking care of their plants you will be sending their motivation to carry on right out the door. Simply keep doing the work for them and allow them to see the error of their own way at their own speed.

.

Perhaps they are more inclined towards bonsai and not at all interested in how well your mint is growing this year. If you allow a natural interest to develop you will have sown the seeds in your child that will turn them into a caring adult.

Organic gardening

Organic gardening has become extremely popular over the last few years.

.

Naturally the main reason for this is the fact that global warming has started to be felt, and sadly human natures is such that they totally ignore warning signs and normally wait until they are knee deep in the dwang before they sit up and take notice.

.

For 60 years the doomsayers have been warning us that we are killing the world and finally when huge climate changes are happening human being have actually started to do things. It is very heartwarming to see that steps are finally being taken worldwide to reduce things like carbon emissions. Now closely aligned to this “new” awareness is the fact that everyone has suddenly become very health conscious.

.

You will find teenagers drinking bottled water and not smoking which is all great as they will be a much healthier generation. Within this healthy eating comes this ORGANIC gardening section. It makes sense that we shouldn’t be eating food that was grown with poisonous chemicals sprayed all over them while they grew.

.

I am lucky to have had one of the very first serious organic farmers (in South Africa) as my brother. He was employing 100% organic farming systems long before anyone else, and was constantly ridiculed by his fellow local farmers. The ridicule dried up very quickly when he was consistently producing 100% crop returns. In fact to this day that specific region of the country has almost fully switched over to his systems and crop choices for that area. Nice to see a stubborn local community switched over completely and all doing organic practices.

.

What you really need to know as the basics for organic gardening are these few guidelines

.

• No chemicals should be used
• Careful attention is placed on the correct crop “rotation” as this eliminates the need for more chemical soil rejuvenation annually
• Using the correct plants as neighbor plants to control insects and other diseases that will affect your crops
• Using other tactics to control certain insects like keeping frog friendly areas and encouraging birdlife and similar pest control methods
• Use organic compost methods, things like worm farming, or compost teas are all great and very effective methods that grow your organic goods like wildfires.
• Correct planning in the initial layout of your garden beds help a lot with controlling factors like funguses. The correct wind flows and water drainage all help you to keep the entire area controlled.
• Weird tactics like free range chickens eating under specific fruit trees are very effective methods and are case or area specific. You will need to do more detailed digging on subjects like those. That is where the forums become so effective.

.

Finally I need to point out to you that if you are planning to sell you organic produce to the general public you might need to have certificates and permits. Please consult your local authorities in regards to this item.

Landscaping overall

Generally when spoken about the term landscaping is generally referred to the overall design and planning of a garden area. This is normally done as a complete project and is very close to interior decorating where you call in a professional landscaper and consult with them on your ideas and then they control the overall design and application of that design.
In an Urban situation the words being bandied around are functionality, arrangement and appearance.
Essentially landscaping is the complete planning of an outdoor space to achieve the same sort of functionality that we enjoy in the interior of our homes. Amenities like maintenance, privacy and comfort are some of the things that affect the overall concept.

.

All aspects of the property are normally taken into consideration, and most of the time when someone landscapes, they are aware that all the aspects are included and things like drainage start to make huge influences to the overall final design.

.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is all great as you pretty much have a clean slate to work with and although the cards you are dealt are your starting tools or the fundamentals.
So while you are able to dig and Move Mountains if that is what you are inclined to do, you will always be restricted by some of the factors, like a rock outcrop on the property. Naturally those would be the very features that you would take pains to feature or hide. That is the beauty of doing landscaping from a beginning point of view.
A popular idea that has been around is the concept of creating “rooms” into the designed areas, so you would have a similar concept to the interior of your home repeated outside.

.

The idea does work well if you are able to spend a lot of time out in your garden – climate allowing.
However if you live in an area that has either a more harsh environment or you tend to have a lifestyle that does not take you outdoors often then your landscaping design would need a totally different purpose.

.

Very often a great landscape design is 100% meant to be viewed strategically from within the house or from areas where guests enter or leave. I am not going to delve into all the dozens of things that you need to consider when tackling a full landscaping project, as the list and details are all going to be too involved.

.

What I would like to point out is to use a quote that has stood me in good stead in many of the different design fields that I have worked in , and the words of wisdom are “measure twice – cut once”. The point is for you to be very sure that you have thought out all the little things that will make up the final design of your new garden. Everything needs to be considered, wind direction, different seasons, drainage, plant types, indigenous or not, sprinkler systems, leisure areas, entertainment areas, pets, children areas and a dozen more.

.

Another factor that you should consider more and more these days is the ecological impact that you are using or forcing onto that piece of land. A garden that is indigenous generally does not need to get extra water as the plants are all acclimatized for your particular area, and this can be a large saving in items like sprinkler systems and your water bill. Naturally you will also get all the correct birdlife and insect life visiting your garden as they will be local insects etc from your area.

.

Finally I thought to add a short list of some of the factors that you should consider when tackling a landscape project.

.

• Municipal by-laws. Get correct advice on whether you need plans or any other legal requirements.
• Surveyors plans.
• Get your hands on copies of the properties plans, as this will show you where water, gas, sewage and electrical cables and pipes are. You do not want to uproot any of those.
• Budget. Having a clear understanding of all the costs BEFORE you begin will stop you picking up unnecessary pain later on into the project.
• Focal points. Pre plan any focal points, water flow areas, wind direction areas and any other factors.
• Future growth. Be fully aware as to how big the trees that you plan into the design are going to grow. Plan accordingly, allowing for the speed of growth and the eventual size that shrub or tree will become.
• Light and shade. Both of these factors need to be carefully considered as mistakes cannot be easily rectified later.
• Drawings. Do all your initial planning on paper, and always look carefully at all the available options. You should never just accept the first option that seems to work. THEN PLAN IT OUT ON THE GROUND. Sorry I had to do that in capital letters, it is so important to try to actually map it out for real on the ground. Many times a massive problem only shows up when you have physically stuck stakes and marks out on the ground. Suddenly you realize that you won’t be able to get your car out of your garage anymore, or whatever.
• Repeat. This is not the chance to do it all again, but a warning to repeat all the steps that you took in the planning to double check that you did all the stuff properly. Cut once remember?

Internet gardening

Here we are again, and I for one am very happy to be here. Today’s topic for the newsletter is one that I have been doing a lot of digging into, in a manner of speaking. It does not really mean much if you say it slowly – Internet gardening? Now I interpret it as meaning how gardening interacts with the internet and how you can put the internet to good use in your gardening efforts. I have divided the most obvious ways that the internet can help you up into these following topics.

.

Your websites

.

This one is naturally one that I absolutely love. Where else can you take you passion for say Bonsai’s and start up a website offering advice, giving help and tips to your fellow bonsai’ees, and still get the opportunity to actually sell both physical products and books to people with the same interests as you. To me this seems like such a perfect way of meeting people and doing business at the same time.

.

In the offline world if you wanted to start up a bonsai shop you would need a lot more startup capital to run your business, you would need to have staff, and you shop hours would pretty much use up all of your life. That would leave you very little time to do what you really love – Bonsai’s.

.

You would need to have your eyes on a lot of different parts of your business, and if you are the sort of person who really wants to keep their business fairly small and manageable then the internet is perhaps the best way to go.
You need to remember that with products like plants, cut flowers or bonsai you need to develop local business. It would be a little silly to post a pot plant overseas. So here you would need to be certain that you do the relevant keyword research in relation to your product. Please remember that in the future Google is going to place massive emphasis on local search, and people’s search results will start to become tailor-made to suite their search patterns. This is a good thing if you have a website that is locally based and relies upon getting targeted business. The more original your content the better your returns will be from Google. All in all the future for small businesses looks very bright online if you stick to the rules and never do any spammy stuff.

.

Other people’s websites

.

Here the beauty of the information part of the internet is brilliant. There is always going to be great websites with new quality posts being added on a regular basis. The advantage that you gain here is instant answers on a query that you might have. In my past if I had a garden query, I would need to stop gardening, get a cup of coffee, and search for the correct book on my shelf, and then look for the answers.

.

Online you need only wash your hands, type in the exact problem and bingo, instant results. Normally if you are a dedicated gardener you will have your favorite websites that you trust and you will generally find your answer very quickly.

.

Blogs

.

Blogs are often a great source of information if you are looking for very detailed information. The nice thing about most blogs is that they are not very commercial and very often are more of an online diary chronicling someone’s gardening passions. If you are lucky, you will find a few blogs that have nice owners and give you great feedback on their specific garden actions.

.

Forums

.

Forums are so fantastic. It is perhaps the most brilliant way for gardeners to get snippets of information, keep in easy contact with their gardening friends from all over the world and have a record kept of all that activity.
If you went onto any of the biggest forums and searched for a specific problem in their search box, you would get all the results from the times those specific words were mentioned. For example if you were having trouble with cutworms, you search, and the answers will be real people’s answers, comments and guesses. You need to realize that sometimes the advice is wrong and misguided, but in the overall you get the fastest and most diverse answers so quickly. Brilliant – it still amazes me, and I sometimes go searching for really obscure problems just for fun.

.

Newsletters – Ezines

.

This side of the internet is normally a little more commercial, but personally I have always welcomed that. How else are you going to be kept up to date with the newest trends, books and other developments if you avoid all commercial stuff. I find that I tend to enroll myself into more that the normal amount just too be sure that I know everything new.

Garden Art – Outdoor Art

OUTDOOR ART

garden art web 2

I am hoping that you are in good health today.

.

Let’s get right into it today. The subject that I have chosen to tell you about today crosses over from one of my biggest passions – gardening – into another part of my life that is more of a calling than a passion – art.

.

Gardening and art, or to be more correct – garden art, sometimes simply known as outdoor art.

.

Now outdoor art is not a new thing it has been around for centuries. Most sculptures are designed to be displayed outdoors. That portion or your garden décor has been taken care of for very many years.

.

You can go into almost any garden supply shop and you will find a very large collection of cast sculptures in all manner of shape and form. You can get a massive array of beautiful water nymphs or winged angels in all manner of poses or as easily get frogs, pigs or fish. Now none of these are unique pieces of art and are commonly cast in a plaster or cement form.

.

More commonly for awhile now, is the tendency towards very large pots and bowls that have become extremely popular. I think that these are great, and you have a lot of flexibility in how you feature them. You could use them to frame a doorway or gateway or simply set them in a row down a specific pathway. You will find them as water features or as a “fallen” pot with plants growing out of them.

.

Now the outdoor art that I am specifically referring to here is real art. In this modern day of products that have been developed and designed to withstand all manner of outdoor conditions, you can now do almost anything with art outdoors.

.

When I first started to do outdoor art I was at an art-exhibition-in-the-park place and one of the fine artists told me that her art has always been able to withstand the outdoor conditions. In truth she was probably not very wrong, but people tend to not want to hang a painting that they had paid R15 000 ($2000) for out on the far wall in their garden.
So knowing this I went and started to experiment with all the different possible ways to do outdoor art that is big, bright and not too expensive.

.

I do believe that the 3 different ways that work well as outdoor art methods are all equally worth pursuing and each has a different look and therefore different application.

.

Option type one.

.

This method is already popular and in daily use in many cities around the world. This is the use of prints on canvass and pulled over a box frame.  What led to this version working so well was the development of products meant for outdoor advertising. These massive billboards all had to be able to withstand extreme weather conditions and therefore were in their own way works of art anyway.
Now the galleries and online shops are starting to offer normal boxed prints of art generally designed to hang outside on your patio walls. They can withstand the normal elements and if you hang them in a place that avoids the most extreme conditions like direct sunlight then they will be beautiful works of art for a long time. Please check that they do have the coating that is normally on the outdoor posters.

.

Option type two

.

This outdoor art method is the easiest for any artist to do, as the biggest difference is for the canvass that you normally paint on need only be pulled over a frame that is “waterproof’. What you need to do is be sure that the frame is either a strong plastic or made with treated wood. The glue that is used in building the framework needs also to be of the waterproof kind. I found to my horror that if you use normal wood glue it softens and comes apart easily.

.

Finally most normal oils or acrylic paints are good enough to withstand all those bad outside elements and you can go ahead and do your painting. I found that it is a great opportunity to do a very large painting and generally an abstract painting is the best method as it generally is done quicker and doesn’t cost too much money. Some of these outdoor paintings are able to be completed for prices of as little as R1000 ($130) for a two meter by one and a half a meter painting.

.

Naturally all art is very tightly connected to the length of time that it takes to complete a specific art piece.

.

I found that I was doing very nice pieces using wood stain as the main colorant and this tended to make the picture both fast to make and equally well suited to the colors of your garden.

.

Option type Three

.

This method came about from me combining normal paintings and sculpture. Essentially I was looking for a way to hang a sculpture on a wall and it led me to discover a product called boiler cement.

.

This boiler cement is an extremely workable carving or molding product and allows great flexibility in designing your artwork.

.

By building up your work onto a webbing frame you are able to produce great graphic pieces or go into great detail doing a complete herd of wild horses’ full sized running down the back wall of your property.
Now that is what I call a great outdoor room. To sit comfortably in my hammock chair in the shade and admire both my brilliantly designed garden and see some great works of art placed strategically around, seems to be a perfect situation to me.

.

Finally, I am extremely willing to give any help to anyone who wants to start doing their own outdoor art. I will show them some samples of my work, and send them in the right direction on where to get the materials.

.

I have still got a website that shows some of the works that I have done in the past. I tend to not do commercial art any more but would consider a commission if the subject seemed like enough fun. Remember that I am a resident of Africa and that while you will get good prices, you will have to pay for shipping and porters to carry it all on their heads to the sea. (ha-ha – not a funny joke – I live in a big city, and we do have real couriers.)Thanks for your time today.
